  Responsibilities to societies

Business organizations increasingly define themselves as members of the societies in which they operate, even using notion as “contract with society”. Boldly they face two difficult dimensions: the first is that the company has to re-define itself as a responsible member of society, while the second is that the company is active in more and more societies. The second dimension is not just more of the first; it adds the complication that companies have to answer in one country to what they do in another country. This is especially true in a world where information, reliable or otherwise, can be gathered and distributed easily.
Corporate Social Responsibility has to be international these days. In other words, business organizations have to be able to answer to expectations in an international arena. Often this involves being held accountable in one country for actions in another country.
There are many theories and approaches these days regarding corporate social responsibility. Rather than taking position in there, it may be best to take into account the various expectations which are raised, whether one agrees with their legitimacy or not. The minimal expectation, although not always phrased in this form, is that organizations make an effort to take a broad range of stakeholders into account (presumably, not all of them at the same time). This means that they realize the full ranges of their impacts on societies and are prepared to act on that realization.
At the same time, one might say that CSR does not exist on its own; rather, it is one of the dimensions of sustainability.
